H&V Support Construction Youth Trust Workshop

H&V Building Services were delighted to support a Construction Youth Trust workshop at The Leigh UTC School in Dartford recently.  Specialising in Engineering and Computer Sciences, the Academy has students aged 11-19.

Our Head of Construction Jon Edwards, and Project Manager Chris McCarthy, spent the day working with year 9 Maths students, running a workshop with a focus on using different methods of measurement and problem solving.

The Construction Youth Trust is a charity which supports young people, helping them to overcome barriers and achieve a successful career in the construction and built environment sector. This work is becoming increasingly important, particularly due to the aging population within the Construction industry.

Within the Annual Population Survey conducted in 2018, it was estimated that 44% of those working in construction were aged 45 years and over between 2014 to 2016. Furthermore, the total number of construction workers over the age of 60 is increasing, yet the number of workers under the age of 30 is decreasing. At H&V we believe that it is essential for us to engage with organisations like the Construction Youth Trust and run these workshops in partnership with local schools, to inspire the younger generation to pursue a career in our industry.

Throughout the day, Jon and Chris worked with groups of 25 students at a time, helping them to use different methods of measuring to calculate the area of the walls and floor within the room.  The students then calculated the quantities of materials required to cover the areas and using this information, the final cost of the project was determined.  Jon and Chris were also on hand to answer any of the students’ questions regarding careers in construction and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
