Radiology Department Emergency Chilled Water System

H&V Building Services Ltd has been appointed to undertake the design and installation of an emergency chilled water system to serve critical cooling to scanning equipment with the Radiology department with the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Following critical failures of the existing cooling equipment serving the MRI’s and CT scanners an emergency system needed to be implemented with urgency.

Temporary chillers were brought in initially whilst existing air-cooled comfort cooling chillers were subject to a full overhaul.

A new dedicated pumped emergency cooling circuit has been extended from the existing air-cooled comfort cooling chillers where connections are made to 4 No. MRI cooling circuits and 1 No. CT scanner cooling circuit.

Automatic control valves have been installed between the individual chillers and the emergency cooling circuit which will allow automatic changeover from the primary cooling source to the emergency cooling source in the event of system failures via a new Trend BMS control system.

The works consisted of:

  • Full overhaul of the existing 2 No. Trane air-cooled chillers. These works included the replacement of the primary onboard pumps, replacement of the compressors, upgrade to switchgear and controls, condenser coil repairs, and full testing and commissioning
  • Installation of a new secondary connection into the existing low loss header for the new emergency chilled water system.
  • Installation of new secondary emergency chilled water pump set and associated pipework
  • Pipework modification between chiller units, the emergency chilled water circuit and the system pipework to provide automatic change over facility via the new Trend BMS system
  • New Trend BMS control system
