The University of Surrey employed H&V Building Services Ltd to carry out a full design and build project for the department of music and media. The client approached ourselves at the feasibility stage with practically a blank canvas and we worked alongside the end user, a specialist acoustic consultant and structural engineer to produce an all-encompassing facility including a TV studio, gallery, TV sound/edit and grading facility, vision and lighting engineering room, acoustic laboratory and MAC media study area.

The project commenced with an enablement works package whilst the project was being designed and included the de-canting of an existing library that was to become the main studio hub, demolition and light strip out including asbestos removal.
The key to the success of the project was to work very closely with the end users to incorporate all of their required needs and provide a state-of-the-art facility to enhance the students learning experience.

Careful consideration had to be given to staff and students who occupied floors above and adjacent to the site, notwithstanding using a shared entrance to the site.

The works were a complete success and were completed in December 2022 to rave reviews from the faculty and students alike.

The works consisted of the following:

• Demolition, strip out and structural alterations
• Asbestos removal
• Construction of a suspended acoustic concrete floor
• Formation of a 2acousic box2 from heavy duty concrete blocks
• Structural steelwork to support large span Posi-joints
• Acoustic wall lining and absorbers
• Numerous acoustic doorsets and glazed screens
• Formation of a mezzanine floor to form a plantroom / store
• Suspended lights and rigging to main studio

To supplement the construction works itemised, a full mechanical and electrical installation was carried out including:

• Installation of AC Fan coil units and VRF systems including centralised controller
• New supply and extract ventilation including bespoke attenuated plenums
• Full BMS control system
• Installation of new distribution boards, submains and switch gear
• Lighting including P4 emergency lighting
• Fire alarm and door access control
• Powered access doors
• New IT and fibre optics
• Installation of an infinity covered “green” wall
