Level 4 and 5 offices and Research Refurbishment

Surrey University employed H&V Building Services to refurbish and remodel the 4th and 5th floors of the Lewis Carrol Building. This provided a new, contemporary facility of 2000m2 for the Psychology Department. We secured the works in open competition.

We had a limited lead-in time but successfully completed a significant amount of work before the students and staff returned from the summer break. We also had to oversee the removal of asbestos whilst actively onsite delivering our strip out and early work packages. We carried out all activities within specified hours, with careful consideration given to staff and students on the occupied floors below and adjacent to our work areas. We completed in November 2019.

The works consisted of:

  • Strip-out of office to shell and core, partial removal of M&E services
  • Installation of kitchenettes/break out areas with new kitchen units, glass splash backs and zip taps
  • Install supporting steelwork, moveable walls and light rigging for virtual reality space
  • Install Corian work surfaces and glazed walls for a Neurology laboratory and mock-up MRI scanning area
  • Carpet and vinyl floor finishes
  • Installation of 144no. bespoke laminated door sets, door access control and automated corridor door sets
  • New suspended ceilings, window pelmets and plasterboard margins
  • Install various partitions including glazed and integral blinds
  • Fireproofing and barriers in line with fire compartment plans
  • Complete decoration throughout
  • Complete new intelligent lighting throughout with renewed main distribution boards to risers and localised power
  • Ancillary services for data, door access control, fire and alarms
  • Ancillary mechanical services, adaption to existing ventilation system, localised pipework to kitchenettes and renew radiators
